INTRODUCTIONS

MAKING A FIRST IMPRESSION

The introduction is your chance to make a good first impression!

The best way to do this is with a good 'Hook' sentence.

 

The Hook: A sentence that pulls the reader in.

  • Use one interesting fact or statistic (be ready to back it up).

  • Use an anecdote (an account of a particular event or incident).

    • Something relevant (historical of biographical)

    • Humorous

    • A moving story

  • Use a quotation (be prepared to analyze/explain it).

  • Pose a question.

 

Continuing the Introduction

  • If necessary, explain the hook.

  • Transition to the thesis.

    • connect hook explanation and/or support to thesis

    • outline your argument

      • academic hypothesis

      • common knowledge on subject

      • personal thought (if appropriate)

Thesis

  • One or two sentence summary of what you are arguing.

  • Take a stand.

  • Be prepared to alter your thesis after writing your paper.
